There are no caps on billings by the province’s doctors, so they basically set their own salaries.
With an average of $360,000 a year they’re the highest paid in the country.
But Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins says ”out of control billing” by some specialists forces the government to find hundreds of millions on top of the $11-billion set aside each year for physician compensation.
Hoskins adds it ”creates huge income for some doctors but it leaves less for family doctors and it squeezes our ability to invest more money in home care and community care and it robs us of the capacity to responsibly plan our health care spending each year.”
Ontario Medical Association president Dr. Mike Toth says he’s surprised and disappointed by the remarks and maintains the best way to get a new deal with doctors is for Queen’s Park to agree to binding arbitration.
