An updated long term affordable housing strategy has been announced this morning by Ontario’s housing minister.
“It is bold and it is transformational,” said Ted McMeekin this morning on legislation soon to be announced which will require housing developers to set aside some homes for Ontarians with affordable housing needs; something he calls, inclusionary zoning.
“Recently, Toronto’s chief planner stated that this city could’ve built 12,000 affordable housing units in the last five years had inclusionary zoning been in place,” McMeekin explained, “So, we’re taking action. I’m pleased to announce that our government will propose very soon legislation for inclusionary zoning.”
178-million dollars will be spent over 3 years on the program. It’s described by the governing Liberals as a way of ensuring that Ontarians have access to affordable and adequate housing and will help them secure employment, raise families and build strong communities.
