As the first of two deadlines for Toronto’s inside and outside employees approaches, John Tory’s urging city negotiators to reach an agreement before possible labour disruption.
CUPE Local 416 outside workers and Local 79 inside employees submitted separate but co-ordinated proposals Wednesday that they feel is a framework for a deal.
Mayor Tory says, ”this round of bargaining is not an opportunity to retrench around the status quo and the City’s reasonable approach to this process can be no way fairly characterized as demanding deep cuts. Let me be clear, the City will not and cannot give in to demands for more money and make no adjustments to extremely generous benefit provisions.”
He points out benefit costs for members of both union locals have risen an average of 4% in recent years.
Local 79 president Tim Maguire says he ”respectfully disagrees” with the suggestion the union needs to make concessions.
The strike or lockout deadline for Local 416 outside workers is 12:01am Friday and for Local 79 inside workers it’s 12:01am Saturday.
