After meeting in Ottawa with the mayors of Canada’s largest cities, the prime minister said, ”We are restarting a relationship that had been significantly neglected over the last 10 years.”
Trudeau Mayors
Justin Trudeau’s promising to be fair and flexible with billions in new infrastructure money as the municipal leaders press for carte blanche on that cash.
Toronto mayor John Tory and his colleagues want to be able to spend it on projects they each prioritize and they want the federal government to pick up more of the tab.
Trudeau says his government’s putting a priority on getting both existing and additional funds out the door quickly to create jobs and help the economy.
The Liberals have promised an additional $60-billion over the next decade, with $5.1-billion of the new money to be given out this coming fiscal year.
Ottawa also wants to move out nearly $9-billion in existing infrastructure funds that have not been allocated to any projects.
The prime minister and mayors are billing the talks as building a new deal for cities.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says they were ”thrilled” to be working with a prime minister that ”gets cities.”
