Health Ministers from across Canada are meeting in Vancouver starting today for their first review of the election promises made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including a pledge to provide $3-billion in home care funds.

Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says at this stage, what’s important is developing a good working relationship together and identifying priorities.

Pharmaceutical costs are expected to be up for discussion during the two-day meeting. It was announced yesterday by the federal government that it would join with provinces and territories in the bulk purchase of pharmaceuticals, a move aimed at making medication cheaper for Canadians.

The ministers will also likely discuss a new law in the works to make doctor assisted death legal in Canada. Legalizing marijuana is expected to come up as a discussion point as well.

A Canadian Cancer Society report earlier this month urged the health ministers to adopt a national policy on palliative care for all Canadians.
