Acclaimed aboriginal novelist Joseph Boyden is among 69 new appointees to the Order of Canada.

Rideau Hall announced the latest recipients Wednesday – saying  46 per cent of them are women – an increase from the average of 31 per cent between 2010 and 2014.

Boyden also served as an honorary witness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission studying Canada’s residential school legacy – and says he believes the arts are powerful tools – to help fix fractured relationships between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 and remains one of Canada’s highest civilian honours.

Appointees are set to be honoured at a ceremony in Ottawa next year.
