It’s a slow commute this morning after a Texas Low tracking across the Great Lakes area last night brought ice, snow and freezing rain to southern Ontario and up to 35 centimetres of snow to the northeast of the GTA.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says even though the snow and ice is no longer falling, road conditions can be deceiving.

“For the most part the roads are bare, but they’re wet, and they’re still slushy in some areas. The ice is pretty much gone, but there is slush on some of the ramps and the roads are wet so we just need to have drivers slow down and give themselves extra time because it will take drivers longer to get where they’re going,” Sgt. Schmidt explained.

Sgt. Schmidt also said officers were called to some 300 crashes on OPP patrolled highways overnight until 5am, while Toronto Police officers were called to about 130 crashes on city streets overnight.

If air travel is in your plans today, you’re advised to check ahead. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is reporting more than 110 cancelled arrivals and departures, along with dozens of delays. There is also a travel advisory for Porter Airlines flights at Billy Bishop Airport.
