Toronto’s mayor wants to cut costs on city supplies and travel and spend more on transit, poverty reduction and paramedics.

John Tory has sent a letter to Budget Chief Gary Crawford, which has been released ahead of today’s 2016 budget launch.

In it, he also says he wants city council to keep property tax hikes in line with inflation.

The mayor has encouraged all city departments to voluntarily find 2 percent in spending cuts. Some heeded the request while many others, including police and the TTC, which are both looking for increases.

Councillor Gord Perks is Tory’s main budget critic on council. He dismisses the mayor’s belt tightening suggestions “as pennies on the dollar compared to what we need.”

City manager Peter Wallace is today expected to outline the city’s spending and revenue expectations for 2016 and reveal the size of the gap that city council will try to fill.

Budget deliberations will end in a final Toronto City Council vote in February.
