U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Francois Hollande are greeting heads of state and government from around the world this morning for high-stakes talks aimed at fighting global warming.
“Never have the stakes of an international meeting been so high, since what is at stake is the future of the planet, the future of life,” Hollande told the conference gathering north of Paris this morning.
Some 150 leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Barack Obama, are at the conference centre to open the United Nations Climate Conference.
Trudeau has scheduled a busy round of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the conference today before flying back to Ottawa late this evening.
Toronto’s Mayor heads to the Paris Climate Conference on Thursday.
“By building more transit, we’re going to help to reduce gas emissions and conserve energy,” John Tory explained.
John Tory will be part of a four person delegation and will meet with mayors of some of the world’s largest cities as part of a forum on how municipalities can play a role in the fight against climate change.
During the summit, Mayor Tory will also attend a reception hosted by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and meet with the French Ambassador to Canada, the new Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna as well as the mayors of Vancouver and Montreal.
