Turkey’s military attache in Moscow has been summed by the Russian government for an official protest following the incident.

The defence ministry says it gave the attache a statement calling the downing of the Russian warplane an ”unfriendly action” and reiterating Russia’s contention the plane had not violated Turkish airspace.

It maintains the plane was inside Syria.

President Vladimir Putin calls the incident a ”stab in the back by accomplices of terrorists” and vows ”significant consequences” for Turkey.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called on all parties to be prudent and to contribute to easing tensions.

He says while the situation is serious he’s hoping for renewed contacts between Russia and Turkey.

Stoltenberg says the assessments of other NATO members supported Turkey’s version of events.
