NURSES WARN STAFF CUTS ARE AFFECTING PATIENTS

A warning from The Ontario Nurses’ Association.

The organization representing health care providers says hospital patients are getting stuck on stretchers in hallways – and in closets – while others are being sent home too soon – because of cuts to nursing staff.

And union president Linda Haslam-Stroud says more than 600 registered nursing jobs have been cut at Ontario hospitals this year – some of them through layoffs and some which she describes as by “stealth” – when hospitals don’t replace nurses who retire – or move on to other positions.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says there is “a transition” as hospitals realize they need fewer registered nurses – and the government moves to provide more community-based care.

But Haslam-Stroud says the nursing positions being slashed aren’t being created in the community – and the nurses don’t appreciate, or want, the lower-paying jobs outside of hospitals.
