Mark Mulroney says he won’t run for the federal Conservative leadership, but the son of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, says he’d never say never.
Mulroney says for now he’s focused on his job as head of capital equity markets at the National Bank.
His father was a labour lawyer who became involved in politics and was a corporate executive at the time of his leadership win in 1983.
Jean Charest is also ruling himself out of the race to succeed Stephen Harper.
He says he’s happy with his new life and job as a lawyer at McCarthy Tetrault.
The 57-year-old Charest was elected to the Commons in 1984 before becoming leader in 1993 after he and Elsie Wayne were the party’s only elected members in that year’s election.
He left for Quebec politics in 1998 as leader of the provincial Liberals before being elected premier in 2003.
Some names circulating as potential leadership candidates include MPs Lisa Raitt, Jason Kenney, Kellie Leitch, Michael Chong and Tony Clement.
