Five authors are sitting on pins and needles – now that their books have made the Scotiabank Giller short list.

“Arvida” by Samuel Archibald (translated by Donald Winkler), “Fifteen Dogs” by Andre Alexis, “Outline” by Rachel Cusk, “Martin John” by Anakana Schofield – and the story collection “Daydreams of Angels” by Heather O’Neill – are in the running for the $100,000 first prize.

Each finalist for the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English – gets $10,000.

This year 168 books were submitted by 63 publishers for consideration by the 5 member Giller Jury.

The prize was established in 1994 by businessman Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller.

The winner will be announced at a gala on November 10th.
