The federal government has lost another round – as it tries to legislate people to reveal their faces during citizenship ceremonies.
The Federal Court of Appeal has squelched a federal request to put the court’s recent decision in favour of a devout Muslim woman on hold – while the government seeks a hearing in the Supreme Court of Canada.
In the ruling issued today, Court of Appeal Justice Johanne Trudel dismissed the government’s application for a stay – of the September 15th decision.
That means Zunera Ishaq – who initially challenged the ban on wearing a niqab – might be able to obtain citizenship – in time to vote in the October 19th federal election.
