There are now more people in Canada who are 65 and older than there are 14 and younger.

New numbers from Statistics Canada indicates those 65 and older made up 16.1% of the Canadian population this past Canada Day, just edging the 16% who were 14 and younger.

Of 35,851,800 Canadians, there are 5,780,900 older Zoomers and 5,749,400 children.

Seniors outnumbered children in Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and B.C.

Stats Canada estimates there were 8,100 centenarians with almost nine in ten being women.

By July 2024, the national agency projects seniors will account for one-fifth (20.1%) of the population, compared with 16.3% who will be younger children.
