Volkswagen Canada is being investigated by Environment Canada in the wake of the U.S. emissions scandal.

A spokesperson for Environment Canada says the government agency is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the automaker to investigate claims the German carmaker used computer technology to mask vehicle emissions.

Spokesperson Mark Johnson says so-called ”defeat devices” are prohibited under Canadian regulations, adding the government would take ”enforcement action” if Volkswagen diesel vehicles sold in this country used pollution masking technology.

The Environmental Protection Act allows major companies to be fined up to $6-million for a first offence and up to double that for subsequent ones.

VW had a record month here in August.

Sales were up more than 5-and-a-half percent from a year ago.
