Ontario’s public high school teachers have a new tentative agreement. A release emailed to Zoomer Radio News from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation says the tentative deal was reached at the Teacher/Occasional Teacher central bargaining table with the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA). The deal still needs to be endorsed by local union leaders at a meeting later this week before it goes to teachers for ratification.

Education Minister Liz Sandals has also emailed a release on the news saying, “I am pleased to announce that a tentative agreement has been reached between the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), the Ontario Public School Boards’

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne was cautiously optimistic yesterday, that deals could be reached with all of the province’s teachers before school starts.

“I look forward to an ongoing partnership with the teachers in this province.  You know I have a deep respect, they know I have a deep respect for them.  They know that.  I talk to teachers all the time.  They know that I have a deep respect for the work that they do, and the support staff in all of our schools.  Does that mean we’re not going to have a difficult time at the negotiating table? No, but I’m very optimistic because we’ve got dates to have those conversations,” Premier Wynne explained while making a funding announcement at Toronto East General Hospital.

Representatives with the English Catholic Teachers are expected to resume bargaining today, while negotiations for the Elementary Teachers Federation resume September 1st. ETFO President Sam Hammond is expected to unveil next steps for his teachers in their work to rule strike action this morning at the annual delegates’ meeting.
