The province thinks Ottawa should help with the planned Ontario Registered Pension Plan, however Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver recently informed Ontario that Ottawa would not help implement the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan or make any legislative changes to allow it to be treated like the C-P-P for tax purposes.

Susan Eng, of CARP – A New Vision of Aging is a member of an advisory group to the Wynne Liberals on the plan.  She tells Zoomer Radio it will likely be a federal election issue.  She says all parties should not be mistaken to think the issue is too complex to brush away because the election campaign is underway.

Eng adds the issue is critical to most families, even members already retired who can see the consequences for the children and grandchildren.  She says many people support changes to CPP and the ORPP wholeheartedly.

In the meantime, Fiance Minister Charles Sousa says other provinces have received federal co-operation with their pension plans, and Ontario deserves the same treatment.
