We’re number one!
After two days of competition at the Pan Am Games, host country Canada is leading the medal count with 24 overall, 10 of them gold. Next is the United States with 19 medals, including 7 gold. Colombia, Mexico and Brazil round out the top five.
It’s a completely different scenario than in the 2011 Pan Am games in Guadalajara, Mexico where Canada finished a disappointing fifth, behind Mexico, Brazil, Cuba and the United States in first place, a perennial Olympic powerhouse.
For the current games, Canada has set a goal of finishing second overall. Many of our athletes have put their lives and careers on hold, while training to compete for our country. Many have sacrificed financially lucrative professional opportunities to participate in sports that will likely never result in multi-million dollar contracts.
Canada has 720 athletes at this games, the largest Canadian continent ever at a Pan Am Games.
