It’s a trend that OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says is alarming and not anticipated.
Dozens of motorists were charged with impaired driving over the long weekend. In fact, charges were up 20 percent on provincial highways compared with the May long weekend last year.
“It’s very disappointing for us to have that kind of increase. I know throughout the weekend, there were days when we had tow trucks and cars all lined up in front of the police stations with officers doing breath tests on these impaired drivers, and one of these impaired drivers was also involved in a collision that also resulted in a fatality. It’s so tragic and it’s so preventable,” Sgt Schmidt explained to The New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back.
Sgt Schmidt says these drivers simply aren’t making plans before drinking and then find themselves making irresponsible decisions.
The Sergeant says police are also concerned because they’re getting more reports of aggressive driving as well.
