Can’t get your taxes in by April 3oth this year?…No problem.

A Canada Revenue Agency mistake means the deadline has  been extended until – May 5th.

It’s because someone in the tax department sent tax preparers an incorrect notification last week – indicating the deadline was May 5th.

And so it shall be.

Revenue Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay says officials will make sure no Canadians are penalized for the C-R-A’s error.

You may remember that last year, Rev-Can extended the tax filing deadline for individuals to May 5th – after the Heartbleed computer bug forced a five-day shutdown of the tax department’s electronic services.

Missing the filing deadline triggers a penalty on any amounts owed – in addition to interest on the outstanding balance.

For the self-employed, the deadline this year remains June 15th.
