Treating sleep apnea early may delay the onset of dementia.

Researchers have found that patients who did not treat the disorder had a 12-year earlier arrival of mild cognitive impairment, and an five-year earlier onset of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

That’s even when factors like rapid weight gain, prior corrective surgeries and short-term breathing problems such as sinus infections were taken into account.

The collection of problems that range from significant snoring to episodes of complete airway obstruction affects more than half of elderly men and more than a quarter of older women.

You can read about the findings in the Journal of Neurology.
