Winnipeg’s art gallery has to come up with some space for what’s believed to be the world’s largest collection of Inuit art.
Only a fraction of the collection is ever on display – so the gallery wants to build a $60 million space – for the 13,000 pieces which include carvings, drawings and prints.
Gallery director Stephen Borys says the centre would help to bring the Arctic to the rest of Canada.
Art is an integral part of Inuit culture and oral history and Fred Ford, head of the Manitoba Inuit Association says the collection in Winnipeg is held in trust on behalf of the Inuit.
Ford says it provides a window to the North – for those who will never have a chance to visit the remote homelands of the Inuit.
