A call for binding arbitration – from the president of the University of Toronto.
Meric Gertler’s written statement says the move would settle a labour dispute between the university – and some 6,000 teaching assistants and course instructors.
Gertler says, “Time is of the essence as we enter into the final weeks of the semester and prepare for critical year-end exams. Let us agree to binding arbitration and let us agree to end the strike, in a way that is respectful of all our students – graduate and undergraduate – and our faculty.”
Just last week, members of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 agreed to send the U of T’s latest offer on to be ratified – but that idea was squelched last weekend during a ratification vote.
But it doesn’t appear the striking TA’s will accept the proposal for binding arbitration.
Union spokesman Craig Smith says members were thrown out of the room by police and then the university made the announcement to the media – without speaking to the strikers.
