Prime Minister Stephen Harper will ask Parliament to extend –  and to expand Canada’s participation in the war against Islamic State in Iraq.

And Harper says he isn’t ruling out that the expansion of the campaign may include engagement in Syria.

Last autumn Parliament approved Canada’s participation in air strikes against Islamic State forces in Iraq for six months – but time is running out.

The Prime Minister says his request will be put to Parliament next week – and will outline what might come next.

Harper says his request will address the issue of whether the campaign ought to extend into Syria.

That’s something the government ruled out in the past – saying that would need an invitation from the Syrian government.

Experts say an extension would likely involve a commitment of more than six months – and one of the reasons would be – to make sure it doesn’t expire during Canada’s fall election campaign.
