It remains to be seen how Canada’s foreign policy will change, if at all, following the reelection of Benjamin Netanyahu. Canada is taking a wait-and-see attitude on the implications of the Israeli election, although Stephen Harper has tweeted his own congratulations to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud Party won re-election in Israel’s national ballot, although it will take some wheeling and dealing to form a government to get the required seats in the 120 seat parliament.

In the final hours of the campaign, Netanyahu announced that he opposed Palestinian statehood and vowed to continue the construction of settlements.

Canada’s foreign policy opposes those positions, although the Harper government has moved Canada closer to Israel than any previous Canadian government.

While Canada still supports a two-state solution and formally opposes the continued construction of Israeli settlements, the government has chosen to express that position privately to the Israelis.

Harper’s tweet also said he looks forward to working with the Netanyahu’s government.
