The United States has turned over more than 60 cultural artifacts to Iraq after investigators determined the items had been stolen from the country and were being sold on the international antiquities market.  The most valuable item is a limestone head of Assyrian King Sargon the second which dates to 713 B.C.  The limestone head is valued at up to 2 million dollars.  It was looted about 2008 when items were taken from Saddam Hussein’s palace.  The announcement comes as Iraq faces another major threat to its ancient heritage. Islamic State militants have been systematically destroying artifacts and recently posted videos of ISIS terrorists taking sledgehammers to priceless items in the museum in Mosul.
