Trustees with Canada’s largest school board have passed a balanced budget, but had to eliminate more than 250 teaching jobs to achieve it. Toronto District School Board trustees approved cutting 256 teaching jobs in order to erase a projected deficit of $16.5 million. However, the board decided against getting rid of the recommended number of support staff who help special education students. Board chair Sean Chen says the cuts can be achieved through retirement and attrition so no teachers will actually lose their jobs.
