Elections Ontario is proposing the government switch fixed election dates from October to June; specifically Saturday, Sunday or a school holiday.   The province’s chief elections officer says weekend or holiday voting would cut down on voter burnout and eliminate campaign overlap with municipal elections which are also held in October.  The government says it’ll look into this as well as a recommendation that would put spending limits on special interest groups.  Elections Ontario reported last month that special interest groups spent almost 9 million dollars during last spring’s provincial election.  Under the current law, any special interest group spending more than 500-dollars on advertising is required to register with Elections Ontario.
