This year’s Hot Docs festival in late April features portraits of music legends Nina Simone and Mavis Staples.

“Mavis!” traces six decades of songs and stories about her and the Staple Singers – while “What Happened, Miss Simone?” is described as an intimate look at the singer’s tumultuous life.

Meanwhile – “Around the World in 50 Concerts” takes an intimate look at the Netherlands’ prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra – while the Canadian film “Music Lessons” profiles the children and music teachers at “Sistema Toronto.”

Other Hot Docs films explore the world of foodies, delve into controversies surrounding U.S. nuclear power and investigate allegedly “non-lethal” Taser devices.

The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival runs April 23rd to May 3rd.
