Tomorrow, the Supreme Court of Canada gives its latest answer to one of society’s most difficult issues; doctor assisted death for suffering, terminally ill patients.
If the current law is struck down, Canada’s doctors are maintaining the same position outlined at the Canadian Medical Association meeting this past August.
They intend to play a significant part in crafting the new rules that would govern how the gravely ill choose to die in this country.
Doctor Chris Simpson is the CMA President. He says, “doctors will be very interested in having a lot of input into the operational details since they would be making front line decisions that go to the very gut of one’s personal ethics and morals.”
Doctors’ support for assisted death lags behind that the of the public at large. A poll last year suggested 90 percent of Canadians agree with physician assisted death in cases when someone is terminally ill and suffering.
