The Canadians held on to a 5-4 lead over the Russians to win their first gold at the World Juniors in six years.

Prime Minister Harper was at the game and later tweeted out his congratulations to the team, coaches and tournament organizers for an “incredible achievement.”  He also acknowledged that Russia remains Canada’s greatest hockey rival.

“Ya, I think it probably is, and you know something, you never forget, they’re a great and a proud hockey nation and these kids here are never going to quit,” Harper told TSN while seated in the stands at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Max Domi scored once and set up two more to claim Canada’s first gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship since 2009. At one point during the second period, Canada was up 5-1, but then Russia scored 3 quick goals.  In the third, the Canadians held on to the one goal lead to win it.  Forward Curtis Lazar says it was a tense final period, but the Canadians were determined to get the victory.

“The guys were a little bit down,” Lazar explained after the win, “but I knew that there was tons of time left and it could go both ways, but with the group we had, we stuck with it, we stayed the course the right way, the Canadian way, and come the third period, we regrouped.  We had a big kill there to start the third period and we just kept on rolling from there.”

Canada was a perfect 7-and-0 through the tournament.
