FLU CASES REACH PEAK IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO

There have been more confirmed cases of the flu in Toronto this season than the average of the past ten years.  Statistics from Toronto Public Health say labs have confirmed another 152 new cases for the week ending December 20th, the most recent week for which data is available.

Dr. Doug Sider is the medical director of communicable disease prevention and control at Toronto Public health.  He says we’re at or close to peak for flu activity, certainly in southern Ontario.

“My worry looking at how this season is shaping up, is that if you haven’t had the flu shot by now, it may be too late this season,” Sider told the CBC, “you may not get much of any benefit.”

Most of the cases come from the A/H3N2 strain of the flu.  There have been concerns that the flu vaccine used this season may not be as effective as hoped against the strain which affects older people the most.

There was a warning earlier this month to expect a “wave” of influenza cases across the city.

The best way to guard against illness is through frequent hand washing, keeping common surfaces clean, and keeping our hands away from our faces.
