NEW POLL HAS TORIES RISING

Some spending announcements ahead of a federal election – have given the Harper Conservatives a slim lead over the Liberals – in a new poll.

The Abacus Data poll gives the Tories 34 per cent support – up from 28 in March – while The Liberals and NDP remain steady at 33 and 22 per cent respectively.

The margin of error for the poll makes the Tories and Liberals essentially even.

Abacus also finds that the Prime Ministers’s approval rating has gone up. The number of people expressing a negative opinion of Stephen Harper has dropped – from 46 per cent to 38 – in the past nine months.

Abacus Chairman Bruce Anderson says pre-election goodies such as income splitting have helped – but the Conservatives have become less partisan recently – and that approach is being reflected in the improved ratings.
