The Toronto Transit Commission is accelerating a review of how drivers are hired and trained after a 14-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run by a TTC vehicle.

Amaria Diljohn had just left the bus at the corner of Finch and Neilson on Friday and was crossing the street when she was struck by the vehicle.

The TTC had already begun a review of drivers after a series of incidents where buses were caught running red lights. But that review is now being given new weight and additional resources. CEO Andy Byford says the recent incidents are unusual. He says the TTC carries 500,000,000 passengers every year, and the vast majority are uneventful.

As part of the review, the TTC is considering installing dashboard cameras on all buses and streetcars.

Byford says the results of the review will be made public.

The 27-year-old driver of the bus later turned himself in to police. It’s not known whether he was aware he had run over Amaria Diljohn. So far, the police have not laid any charges.
