Sony Pictures Entertainment says there will be a limited theatrical release of “The Interview”- beginning on Christmas Day.

Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton has announced that  Seth Rogen’s North Korea farce “will be in a number of theatres on Christmas Day, ” and Sony also is continuing its efforts to release the film on more platforms – and in more theatres.

The news comes as some powerful authors had urged Sony to make the film widely available.

Salman Rushdie and Tony Kushner are among the writers who’ve signed a “PEN American Center” petition calling for the movie to be released.

Sony called off the film’s release – after hackers threatened violence against theatres showing the film.

The petition from the renowned literary and human rights organization says pulling “The Interview” would be a “lasting blow” to free expression.

Rushdie is a former PEN president – who  faced death threats 25 years ago – after publication of “The Satanic Verses,” which was condemned as blasphemous by some Muslims.

Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini also called for Rushdie’s death.
