What began as a high school project in British Columbia and inspired a movie is now on its way to Broadway with help of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
In the 1970s, a musician named Hans Fenger was hired to teach music in Langley, BC. A former rock musician with no formal music training, he decided to teach his students current pop songs.
They made the primitive recording we just heard. It was discovered by an actor and record collector from Victoria named Brian Linds. He sent the album to an alternate radio deejay in New York. From there it was made into an underground CD that inspired the 2003 movie School of Rock, starring Jack Black.
Now a Broadway musical version of the School of Rock is scheduled to open next November with music from the movie and new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The script is being written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey.
