PROVINCE BRACES FOR SCATHING AUDITOR'S REPORT

There are signs the government of Kathleen Wynne is preparing for some scathing news on its handling of two big-ticket issues.

The provincial auditor general will release her annual report today. Bonnie Lysyk will be talking about the way the government handled a number of files. But the big ones are expected to be smart metres and the MaRS Office Tower.

As an indication of what the government is expecting, Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid are standing by to respond when Lysyk’s report is released at 3:00 this afternoon.

Installing smart metres throughout the province cost a billion dollars. Lysyk will report on whether that money was spent wisely.

But MaRS is expected to be an even tougher pill to swallow. The Wynne government tweaked its rules to lend about two-hundred million dollars to the medical charity. The MaRS office building now sits mostly empty, and taxpayers continue to be on the hook for interest payments on the loan.
