There’s unsettling evidence of a mental health problem in this province.
The Toronto-based Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has drawn attention to the problem – in its annual Mental Health Survey.
The report reveals that more than 230-thousand Ontario adults “seriously contemplated suicide” last year. That amounted to 2.3 percent of the province’s adult population.
CAM-H Senior scientist Doctor Robert Mann says the research also found a sharp rise in self-rated poor mental health.
The numbers increase – from just under 5 per cent in 2003 – to just over 7 per cent last year.
But those aged 18 to 29 saw a dramatic increase – from about three per cent in 2009 – to 12 per cent last year.
Doctor Mann says for the first time, experts are seeing data illustrating that the kind of stress people are experiencing in this time of their life – is substantial.
