If you’ve been for a visit to your doctor lately, there’s a good chance he or she is using electronic medical records rather than paper based files.
The 2014 National Physician Survey shows 75 per cent of doctors across Canada report using electronic records to enter or retrieve patient notes. That’s triple the percentage that had gone digital in 2007.
Dr. Garey Mazowita is president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He says while doctors want to be in the 21st century, it’s not as easy as flipping a switch.
He says many doctors have to scan and digitize up to two-thousand charts, with pages and pages of information –on top of working in excess of 50 or 60 hours a week.
