THALIDOMIDE VICTIMS PRESS FOR MORE FEDERAL AID

Victims of a government approved drug, given to pregnant women in the 1950’s and 60’s met with with Canada’s health minister Monday to discussing their request for more financial support. The drug Thalidomide caused disastrous birth defects. The Thalidomide Victims Association of Canada says survivors of the tragedy are aging and require more financial support to cope with their day to day needs. A lump-sum payment was given by the government to victims in the 1990s as compensation. Ho0wever, Health Minister Rona Ambrose has called the thalidomide disaster an incredibly tragic event and has said she wants to work with victims. The meeting came on the same day the House of Commons was expected to vote on an NDP motion of support for the victims.
