DYSFUNCTION TO THE END AT THE TDSB

The Toronto District School Board held its last meeting of the current term. And it appears the dysfunction of the board held on to the end.

Outgoing trustee Sam Sotiropoulos invoked Mark Twain during his final remarks, saying, “God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards.”

The board has been wracked by dissension over a number of items during the term. The latest is a complaint from some trustees that Director of Education Donna Quan is stonewalling their efforts to assess her leadership performance. They say Quan has refused to divulge terms of her contract that were negotiated with former Chair Chris Bolton.

But trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher tells says the TDSB is no worse than any other government agency. She feels it has just been in the spotlight a lot recently.

In response to complaints from some trustees, the province has initiated a review of practices at the troubled board.

Eleven new trustees will take office next week.
