If you’re having trouble following directions on a prescription bottle or understanding your doctor’s advice, scientists have a recommendation: attending a concert, going to a play, or visiting a gallery or museum.

New research in England has discovered a connection between engaging in cultural activities and being able to process health-related information.

The study also found so-called “health literacy” can be improved by using the internet.

The study finds that engaging in internet activity improves cognitive skills. Exposing yourself to new cultural experiences has the same effect. Either can help those over 50 understand and follow their doctor’s instructions.

The study appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Health.
