FUTURE OF BILLY BISHOP AIRPORT WON'T BE DEBATED UNTIL LATE 2015

It’s going to be a while before the incoming Toronto city council has to deal with one of the more contentious issues on the future agenda.

The city is still waiting on data from a number of sources to do with the expansion of Billy Bishop airport. City Council decided earlier this year that it couldn’t make any decision without more information.

An environmental assessment still has to begin. And the city is still waiting on information on capping the number of flights, and the noise level of the new Bombardier jets that Porter Airlines wants to fly into the airport.

Deputy City Manager John Livey says councillors don’t seem as eager to push for a decision. He adds it will likely be next fall before the issue of island airport expansion makes it to the city council agenda.

The delay will make it more likely Toronto’s incoming mayor can take part in the debate. John Tory’s son is involved in a transport company that has offices at the island airport. That potentially puts Tory in a conflict of interest. He’s waiting on a ruling on whether he can take part in the debate.
