A play about Queen Elizabeth hasn’t even opened on Broadway yet. But already it’s being asked to move.

As we told you yesterday, Helen Mirren will recreate her role as the Queen when The Audience opens on Broadway in February.

It’s playing at the Schoenfeld Theatre, but the current occupant wants the newcomer to take another theatre.

The hit production of Terence McNally’s It’s Only a Play” is currently at the Schoenfeld. It has extended its run, but that means moving to another theatre to make way for the royal replacement.

It’s Only a Play likes it where it is, so it has tried to convince The Audience to move instead. It even went so far as to offer the newcomer $400,000 to accept a new address.

Although it’s a lot of money, it’s about half what it will cost It’s Only a Play to move. But the Audience producers say the Schoenfeld’s decor makes it look like a palace, and that fits the royal theme of the show.
