Every year thousands of Canadians, many of them seniors and the elderly, end up in hospital every year because of falls on ice. Experts in Toronto are tyring to get ahead of weather by offering lots of advice to help you stay on your feet through the winter months. Researchers at the winter lab at Toronto Rehab are in the process of finding the perfect footwear to prevent falls. But until that materializes, they are offering a number of suggestions to help. Stay active to keep fit and to maintain muscles and balance. Plan ahead; acquire sand or salt for your walkway before the snow falls and carry small bags of sand or salt with you that you can use on an icy patch. If you do slip, they suggest you try and break your fall with your arms. They say it’s better to break a wrist than a hip.
