The United States has bombed Islamic State targets in Syria for the first time.
US President Barack Obama has threatened to expand its airstrikes against ISIL from Iraq into Syria. And he’s doing so as part of a coalition with five neighbouring Arab states. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates are involved.
The coalition is seen as a diplomatic victory for Obama.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister says Canadian security services are monitoring the threat from ISIL to civilians here. An ISIL spokesman called on Muslims to rise up against civilians of Canada, or any country that is part of the coalition in Iraq and Syria. Harper says his government has legislation to protect against a threat to Canadians, and he is looking to expand those powers.
Canada has several dozen special forces in the region training Iraqi ground forces. But Harper says Canadians are not involved in the strikes in Syria.
