A Toronto hospital has received an immensely generous donation.

Peter Gilgan – the billionaire philanthropist and founder of Oakville-based Mattamy Homes – is giving St. Michael’s Hospital $30 million.

It’s the biggest donation in the hospital’s history – and will go toward the construction of a new tower – at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets.

The building will be specifically designed for critically ill patients suffering from time-sensitive and life-threatening conditions.

It’s all part of a larger redevelopment – including much-needed renovations to nearly double the size of St. Mikes’ downtown emergency department – which deals with almost 75,000 people a year.

The funding brings Gilgan’s lifetime philanthropic giving to $150 million – and includes $40 million to the Peter Gilgan Centre For Research And Learning at Toronto’s Sick Children’s Hospital and a $10 million gift to the new Oakville Hospital Foundation.
