The South African once known as “the Blade Runner” has been found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

That’s similar to manslaughter

The judge in the case of double-amputee former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius rendered her verdict this morning. She called his actions “negligent” after dismissing a more serious charge of pre-meditated murder.

A separate hearing will be held beginning October 13th to hear arguments about the sentencing. In the meantime, Pistorius is free on bail.

Masipa has broad leeway in determining a sentence. She could hand Pistorius a suspended sentence, or send him to prison for up to 15 years.

The prosecution says it will wait for the sentence before deciding whether to appeal.
