The lights on Broadway dimmed for Joan Rivers after all.
The Broadway League had originally decided that the late comedian didn’t qualify for the traditional tribute, even though she had performed on Broadway several times, earning a Tony nomination for Sally Marr … and her Escorts in 1994.
The League says it reserves its tribute for those who had been recently active on Broadway or “synonymous with Broadway.”
But several producers said they would go ahead and dim their lights. And leading Broadway artists — including Audra McDonald and Harvey Fierstein — condemned the decision by the Broadway League urged it to reconsider.
In face of the campaign, the League reversed its decision and the lights dimmed on all Broadway marquees for one minute at 6:45 last evening.
